Joint venture
Green Ferro Alloys Private Limited is a joint venture between Pelden Group and Druk Wang Alloys Limited. Between them they bring more than two decades of steel and ferroalloy production in Bhutan to this plant.
Pelden Group runs two 11 MVA submerged arc furnaces at Pasakha Industrial Estate in Chhukha, commissioned in 2009. It is one of only two manufacturers of silico manganese in Bhutan, specialising in medium, low and ultra low carbon products.
Raw materials and finished product are checked in its own testing facility. The group's first venture was Bhutan's first steel melting shop in 2003, and its interests span steel, ferroalloys, mining and tourism.

Established in 2005, Druk Wang Alloys Limited is the second largest producer of ferro silicon in Bhutan, and a public limited company listed on the Royal Securities Exchange of Bhutan. It runs two 18 MVA submerged arc furnaces on the country's hydroelectric power, the second of them recently commissioned.
It has held ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certification since 2014, with BIS added in 2023, and lists Tata Steel, Jindal Steel & Power, SAIL, JSW and AM/NS India among the companies it supplies.

Why Bhutan
Three things about operating here shape what we can offer a steelmaker.

Bhutan generates the large majority of its power from run-of-river hydro schemes. A submerged arc furnace is a very large electrical load, so where that power comes from dominates the carbon footprint of the finished alloy.

Norbugang sits close to the border crossings that feed the northern and eastern Indian steel plants, keeping freight legs short for regional customers.

Bhutan has a long-established ferroalloy sector with the technical labour, regulatory framework and power agreements that a smelting operation depends on.
